Positive results at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art auctions

Sotheby’s back-to-back contemporary art auctions held June 25 and 26 in London neared their top pre-sale expectations. In the evening sale on 25 June, 37 of the 39 lots offered found buyers; as did 187 of the 217 offered at the day sale on 26 June. The two-days realised £34,261,850 (roughly 5.4 billion yen).

While Andy Warhol was the highest grossing artist, several works by Asian artists neared or exceeded their pre-sale estimates: Zhang Xiaogang’s Comrades (1999) fetched £433,250; Kusama Yayoi’s Infinity – Nets (Oqabt) (2007), £337,250; Murakami Takashi’s Troll’s Umbrella (2002), £139,250; Ai Weiwei’s Untitled (2006), £91,250; and Nara Yoshitomo’s The Little Pilgrim (Night Walking) (1999), £39,650.
