Japan Media Arts Festival announces award winners

The Japan Media Arts Festival Executive Committee (The Agency for Cultural Affairs / The National Art Center, Tokyo / CG-ARTS) has announced the 24 award-winning works in the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival. One Grand Prize, four Excellence Prizes and one Encouragement Prize were awarded to outstanding works in each of the four divisions of art, entertainment, animation and manga. The 2009 Festival received a record-breaking 2592 entries from 54 countries around the world.

The Grand Prize in the Art division went to growth modeling device (David Bowen, USA), a kinetic installation that uses laser device to measure and replicate in realtime the growth of a plant. Among the four Excellence Prizes in the category was SEKILALA by SHIMURABROS. (Shimura Yuka and Kentaro) of Japan.

The awards ceremony will take place on 2 February, and the Festival – including exhibition and screening of the award-winning and other outstanding works plus symposia and other events – from 3- 14 February at The National Art Center, Tokyo.
