Britain’s high profile contemporary art prize was awarded last night to site-specific painter Richard Wright, with the announcement and award presentation broadcast live on national television. The poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, presented Wright the £25,000 prize during a ceremony at Tate Britain.
Wright was born in London in 1960, and studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and Glasgow School of Art. He made figurative paintings on canvas until the early 1990’s, after which he changed his practice to creating abstract images on walls. None of his works survive their commission.
