In a truly outstanding work of art, new and traditional not only exist harmoniously side by side, but also highlight the intrinsic value of one another. Thus argued the US art critic known for coining the term ‘action painting’, Harold Rosenberg. This show takes as its inspiration (and title) Rosenberg’s The Tradition of the New, featuring nine artists from across Asia: Lale Tara (Turkey), Newsha Tavakolian (Iran), Shilpa Gupta (India), Jompet Kuswidananto (Indonesia), Kuo I-Chen (Taiwan), Tsai Charwei (Taiwan), Tu Wei-Cheng (Taiwan), Wu Chi-Tsung (Taiwan) and Yamaguchi Noriko (Japan). Expect the ‘new’ and ‘traditional’ found in the works of these relatively young artists to be as varied as their backgrounds.
