Wilhelm Sasnal: 16mm films

2 April – 6 June
RAT HOLE GALLERY (Minamiaoyama)

Love songs     2005    16mm film

The first solo show in Japan by the internationally acclaimed artist born in Poland in 1972. While Wilhelm Sasnal is perhaps best known for his paintings that reflect the realities of Polish youth coming of age since the country’s transition to democratic rule in 1989, this exhibition focuses primarily on the his 16mm films. It also presents several paintings selected by the artist to correspond with these films. In Sasnal’s personal-fantasy style short films such as Love songs, set to music by Sonic Youth, we sense an interest in familiar, everyday objects, and in music and words. His representative paintings, rendered in dynamic brushstrokes and shades of black, subtly evoke the problems with which society is fraught.
