May 1980. Thousands of civilian protesters calling for democratization took to the streets of Gwangju where they clashed with government soldiers, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Commemorating the 30th anniversary of the uprising, The Flower of May explores our understanding of history and its evolution over the past 30 years through the works of 25 artists including Ai Weiwei, Lee Bul and Alfredo Jaar who approach art as a social practice. Without referencing the Gwangju Democratization Movement specifically, this exhibition is of interest too for its statement about what a contemporary art-based commemorative exhibition should be. It also marks the Kunsthalle Gwangju’s first (pre-opening) exhibition, held in advance of the museum’s official launch scheduled for July 30.
Participating Artists: Ai Weiwei, Kader Attia, Cai Yuan & Jian Jun Xi, Candice Breitz, Lee Bul, Chonggon Byun, Baptist Coelho, Rainer Ganhal, Dora García, Igor Grubić, Seungchan Gwon, Dalyong Heo, Afredo Jaar, Sunguck Kang, Juyon Kim, Kyungho Lee, Leenam Lee, Arto Lindsay, Moonho Ma, Tony Oursler, Nam June Paik, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Matthew Schreiber, Giuseppe Stampone, Caecilia Tripp
