Held every year since 1994 with the aim of supporting young, potentially world-class artists, the VOCA exhibition features new, two-dimensional works by artists under 40. VOCA’s status as a launch pad for the career of young artists is evidenced by a list of previous participants that includes the likes of Fukuda Milan, Yanagi Miwa, Murakami Takashi, Aida Makoto, and Ninagawa Mika. The 17th edition of the annual presents the diverse expressive approaches of 35 artists including this year’s VOCA Prize winner Miyake Saori. One cannot help but conclude that the large number of representational works conspicuous this year that express wavering, transience and a sense of unease are are also reflection of our times.
