SILENT

11.3 – 1.11
Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art

Silence hones the senses. John Cage’s performance 4’33” (1952) – in which four minutes and 33 seconds of silence, save extraneous sounds within the venue, transpired from the time the performer entered and exited the stage – may have been the first work to address this subject. This exhibition focuses on experimental visual artworks by 14 Japanese and international artists that explore the concept and meaning of the sound of silence. Exhibiting artists: Francis Alys, Yael Bartana, John Cage, Edith Dekyndt, Fujimoto Yukio, Jeppe Hein, Germaine Kruio, Kris Martin, Matsuzawa Yutaka, Oscar Munoz, Yoko Ono, Sugimoto Hiroshi, Jochem van Tol, and Yagi Lyota.
