Psychiatrist and art collector Takahashi Ryutaro uses the term ‘neoteny’ (referring to the retention of juvenile characteristics in adults) to define a group of Japanese contemporary artists who emerged in the 1990s. Here he presents part 2 of a two-segment show – separating the boys and girls – focusing on the next generation born after 1975, or the neo-neoteny. In contrast to an abundance of mild-mannered, narcissistic works by the boys in part 1, the girls’ works are large in scale and dynamic! Among the 19 neo-neo girls exhibiting are Kashiki Tomoko, Shioyasu Tomoko, and Haruko Maiko.
