A solo show by the Heisei painter and advocate of Neo Nihonga christens the Mizuma Art Gallery’s new space in Ichigaya. The title “Furyu” relates to his astonishingly gorgeous and elaborate designs. Tenmyouya, who affiliates himself with the gorgeous aesthetic that has colored Japanese history – at times distancing itself from the so-called orthodox school – transcending various periods in history including the Muromachi and Edo periods, has this time developed a body of work featuring men with stylish tattoos on their backs. He has challenged himself to a new area of adornment that has a unique sense of beauty and originality in a five-piece series of work with two fighting men against a background of gold leaf based on an idea derived from the martial arts treatise, The Book of Five Rings, by Miyamoto Musashi.
