Born in Dresden in 1932, Richter managed to reach West Berlin just six months before the building of the Wall. He is recognized as one of the most significant artists working today, and despite working in a number of markedly different styles, he has consistently continued to pursue the possibility of painting. His Overpainted Photographs – pieces of which were shown first by the gallery at the G-tokyo 2010 art fair – consisting of snapshots taken by the artist himself then overlaid with oil, acrylic or enamel, while small in scale, pack a tremendous sense of presence. This solo show features some 30 new works from the series. A new book containing entries from the artist’s diary, an interview and essays by scholars will be published in conjunction with the show.
