James Cohan Gallery (New York)

The Chinese conceptual artist best known for his 8848 minus 1.86 chronicle of lopping off the top of Mt. Everest that makes a riot of truth and fiction. For his second show at the New York gallery he provokes the viewer to think about cultural perception. Here he presents ‘works by a new generation of Middle Eastern artists’ – political cartoon-like paintings, installations incorporating artifact-like ceramic fragments, works all rife with the clichéd symbols in an attempt to meet (one-sided?) Western expectations of a brand of ‘contemporary Middle Eastern art’.
