Tang Contemporary Art (Bangkok)
Since his appearance on the Thai contemporary art scene in 2000, Wattuya has translated his critical viewpoints into socially provocative artworks that question the identity of his country. Uniform/Uniformity presents paintings based on group photos taken from magazines that point out the importance of appearances in Thai society and the role of uniforms as indicators of social status. The artist transforms politicians standing in a row, families posing for wedding pictures, and beauty pageant contestants into images evocative of the social order, asking the viewer in turn to question its meaning.
