Japanese curators make mark at Korean biennials

Not one but two Japanese curators will be on the scene for this year’s triumvirate of large-scale international art festivals in Korea. Independent curator and art critic Takashi Azumaya is directing the 2010 Busan Biennale, while independent curator Fumihiko Sumitomo is part of the curatorial team for Media City Seoul. Following the April 20 unveiling of New York-based curator Massimiliano Gioni’s artist list for the Gwangju Biennale, both Busan and Media City Seoul have issued their own preliminary press releases. For Busan, Azumaya is focusing on the theme “Living in Evolution,” and plans to present works by approximately 75 artists, although he has yet to reveal his line-up of participants. Media City Seoul will address the theme of “Trust,” and has released an initial line-up of 28 artists and groups. Notable participants include Yael Bartana, Jimmie Durhan, Taro Izumi, Minouk Lim, Catherine Opie, Walid Raad and Tino Sehgal.

Busan runs September 11 to November 20; Media City Seoul September 7 to November 17.
