From Hara Museum ARC, Gunma
Izumi Kato is an artist who is making a splash in the world of art. Included in the 2007 Venice Biennale, Kato launched his career as a painter, but has recently started to focus on sculptures. In his work Untitled on view in the exhibition Body and Soul- Selections from the Hara Museum Collection at Hara Museum ARC, the artist uses deformation and codification to express the human form in an almost grotesque way, and yet it still conveys warmth and humor and seems to touch upon the root of life and existence.

This work was originally created for Art Scope 2007 / 2008 – Faces of Existence in 2008 at the Hara Museum in Tokyo and was later purchased for inclusion in the Hara Collection. Currently on view at the Hara Museum is the exhibition Art Scope 2009 – 2011: Invisible Memories, which runs until December 11.
