From Hara Museum, Tokyo/Hara Museum ARC, Gunma
On July 20, the Hara Museum made its first donation totaling 542,503 yen from sales of the Yoshitomo Nara x Hara Museum “My Drawing Room” Charity Postcard Set to the Japan International Volunteer Center (JVC). We wish to thank the artist and everyone who contributed to this effort. The next donation will be made to Japan Platform upon completion of sale of the remaining sets.
Here is what we learned about the organization from a JVC press officer who came to visit the museum last month.
An international NGO established in 1980, JVC currently provides aid to nine countries around the world. After the earthquake of March 11, JVC has supported the operation of volunteer centers in two cities in Miyagi Prefecture: Kesen-numa and Iwa-numa. Donations from the Hara Museum will go towards some of the ongoing and future activities of JVC which include the following:
Providing Support over the Radio in Minami Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture
In April, the JVC set up an emergency FM radio station in Minami Soma. The station provides updates on radiation levels, announcements from the city government and information about events. To help people access these broadcasts, JVC supplied 1,300 radio sets and also helped introduce equipment that allow evacuees outside the city to listen over the Internet. One staff member, a former news reporter, was dispatched to Minami Soma where he is working closely with the new radio station by collecting news and writing articles.
Relief Activities in the Shishiori Area, Kesen-numa City, Miyagi Prefecture
A major fishing town, Shishiori was severely damaged by the tsunami. As of August 26, JVC is helping with the clean-up of fishing equipment and restoration of fishing nets, has provided electric fans to those living in the evacuation centers and assisted in running school buses in the area.
