Rokuro Hara (1842-1933) was a businessman who contributed to the industrialization of Japan through the establishment of railroads, banks and other businesses. While young, he studied in America and England and was well versed in Western things. He was also a connoisseur who amassed a valuable collection of traditional art that included many masterpieces from Japan, China and other East Asian countries.

Celadon vase with long neck on globular body (National Treasure), Southern Song dynasty

Celadon vase with long neck on globular body, a designated National Treasure and one of the collection’s most representative works, will be on display in both Parts I and II of the exhibition. As a masterpiece among the celadon vases that have come to Japan from China, its beauty lies in the harmonious balance between its pale blue glaze, smooth surface and soft roundness.

Landscape of Yodo river (detail), Maruyama Okyo, hand scroll, Edo period

Paintings will be divided among the two parts. In Part I, the focus will be sumi-ink paintings, including Portrait of Lie Zi by Sesson and Tiger in a Bamboo Grove by Kano Eitoku, while the focus of Part II will be the human form, including Female Passing through a Reed Portiere (Important Cultural Property), a forerunner of the ukiyoe beautiful women genre, and Rei Shojo with flower basket by Jasoku. Meanwhile, the picture scroll Landscape of Yodo river by Maruyama Okyo will be displayed with different sections shown in Parts I and II, giving viewers a detailed and varied look at life on both banks of the river from a unique spatial point of view.
A National Treasure, an Important Cultural Property and other certified masterworks from the Hara Rokuro Collection assembled together for your enjoyment in one setting.
