Part II of Seeing the Sound, Hearing the Picture has begun, with a new selection of artworks to enjoy with your mind’s ear.
Nunobiki Falls (detail), Sumiyoshi Hiroyuki, Edo period
This is a scene from Chapter 87 of Ise Monogatari (Tales of Ise) entitled Nunobikinotaki (Nunobiki Falls). It shows the central character as he visits the Nunobiki Falls with a friend and his older brother during a time when he lived in a village in Ashiya. Everything is drawn with great detail, from the people to the landscape. Since olden days, Nunobiki Falls was famous as a subject of poetry and a place of sentimental longing for town folk.
Installation view
As you might envision a landscape while listening to music, do you sometimes feel you can hear the sounds depicted in a picture? That is what these selected works of art entice you to do: to view the wind, water, a cheering crowd, animals, and to hear them in your mind’s ear. They say art is made by the heart to be enjoyed by the heart. This exhibition invites you to enjoy art from a slightly different perspective.
