The exhibition catalogue for the current exhibition at the Hara Museum is now on available for purchase at the Museum Shop. Pedro Costa and Rui Chafes are two artistic geniuses from Portugal who have won international acclaim in different areas of expression: cinema and sculpture. The two artists, who are close friends in private life, chose “MU” the Japanese word for “nothingness,” as the exhibition title in honor of the famed Japanese movie director Yasujiro Ozu.
The meaning of the title is reflected in Chafes ideas about his own work, which he says is “about absence and not about presence.” Costa saw the Hara Museum not as a museum, but a house with memories, likening each room to “a sequence or a part of the story” that can be connected.
The exhibition features a total of ten works, consisting of four video installations and six sculptural works. In these installations, video material from Costa’s representative works No Quarto da Vanda (In Vanda’s Room) and Juventude em Marcha (Colossal Youth) are brought together with iron sculptures by Chafes to create a dialog within the space of the museum.

Includes shots taken while the artist were on-site. Great pains were taken by the museum’s designer to achieve the proper color and contrast in the catalogue’s interior images.
These works appeared at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Portugal. The space at the Hara Museum necessitated a reconfiguration of the installation.
This is the outdoor installation Moonlight by Ruis Chafes. The view is from the terrace towards the glass-enclosed sunroom.
