July 1, the last day of the exhibition Hiroshi Sugimoto: From naked to clothed at the Hara Museum, is drawing near! Mark your calendars and come see the show before then. Today, we introduce a few exhibition-related items currently on sale at the Museum Shop.
Booklet: Sharebon Hisureba Hana — Hiroshi Sugimoto: From naked to clothed, ¥945 (tax included)
This little booklet contains all the exhibited works and descriptive texts in the form of a sharebon, a popular genre of fiction of the Edo period. It consists of folio-style pages stitched together in traditional Japanese fashion with the accompanying text to the side of each photo and the artist’s profile at the end. Written by Sugimoto himself in a humorous style that makes for delightful reading. Monochrome photos with Japanese text.
Hiroshi Sugimoto: From naked to clothed Large-format Postcard Set, ¥ 1,470 (tax included)
A set of 15 large-format cards, each featuring a different work from Sugimoto’s Stylized Sculpture series. Based on the idea that “the history of human clothing is as old as the history of the human race itself,” this series depicts the fashions of seminal 20th century designers such as Gabrielle Chanel, Yves Saint-Laurent, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo. Instead of live models, the series was photographed using mannequins that embodied the ideal shape of each era, depicting them as sculptures. It delves into the relationship between humans and clothing and the meaning of “being clothed”
Senpuki Fan, ¥30,000 (tax included)
The city of Marugame in Kagawa prefecture is famous for its traditional uchiwa (hand-held fans). These uchiwa were designed by Sugimoto at the time of the exhibition Hiroshi Sugimoto ORIGINS OF ART held at the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art from 2010 to 2011. On the fan is the word senpu (each a play on the words for “fanning the air”), written with a variety kanji characters by Sugimoto himself with sumi ink and brush, making each one unique. The “seemingly haphazardly attached handle” (as described in the included descriptive note) is made of natural wood gathered in the vicinity of Marugame.
