Sophie Calle Exhibition-related Books / From The Museum Shop at the Hara Museum

This information is about books at The Museum Shop related to the current exhibition Sophie Calle, For the Last and First Time, on view at the Hara Museum until June 30.

Blind
This volume encompasses three Sophie Calle’s works on the blind, including the earliest one, The Blind (1986), in which she asked the blind to describe their image of beauty; the 1991 Blind Color, in which she asked blind people about their imagination of perception and compared their descriptions to musings on the monochrome by Rauschenberg and other artists; and The Last Image (produced in 2010 and presented in the current exhibition), an installation consisting of text and photographs in which she questioned people who had lost their sight about the last image they could remember. In these works, she invites the viewer to contemplate the questions: What is beauty? What does it means to see? Includes braille for all text.

Text is in English (a Japanese translation is included when purchased from the Hara Museum)

DOULEUR EXQUISE (Exquisite Pain)
This is the 2003 French edition of Sophie Calle’s Exquisite Pain, an installation made for her solo exhibition at the Hara Museum in 1999. This work consists of two parts. In part one (Countdown), letters to her most beloved person and photographs are used to relate the story of the worse day of her life during a journey to Japan for a scholarship. Part two (Countup) is the story of her gradual recovery, which she achieved by sharing her story of hurt with other people and then listening in turn to their stories about the worse experience of their lives. These revelatory stories of lost love, of lost eyesight, etc. have found resonance in the hearts of many viewers.

Text is in French (a partial Japanese translation is included when purchased from the Hara Museum. An English translation is also available upon request at the Museum Shop.)
Hardcover with color plates, 281 pages.
Size: 197 × 107 × 24 mm
