[Projection Mapping]
Projection Mapping is a method of expression which uses images projected directly onto buildings, furniture and natural objects, unlike the typical video or film image projected onto a screen. It is a technique that has been used in Europe at concerts, entertainment venues, commercials and cityscapes. It is also widely used in tourism promotion.
(1) Projection Mapping Workshop at Hara Museum: The Making of BYAKUYA
November 19 (Saturday), 2011
RESERVATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED (12/17/2011)
In October, the Hara Museum presented a unique visual/dance performance entitled BYAKUYA with visuals produced by the film director and image maker Oku Shutaro. Oku projected his monotone imagery directly onto the Hara Museum buildings and environs using an advanced version of the projection technique called Projection Mapping (originally developed in the west) that transformed the museum garden into a real time, interactive theater.
In this special workshop, participants will receive two hours of instruction by Oku. They will then go to the museum garden and apply what they learned in their own projections onto the museum wall. Participants of all ages are welcome.

[Oku Shutaro]
Shutaro Oku was awarded “Special Mention” at the Seoul Film Festival in 2002 for his maiden work “KAI-ON”, after which he has produced a constant stream of films such as “Labor Cop”, “Japanese Naked Tribe” and “Aka-sen”. Since his first official invitation to participate in the 2006 Berlin International Film Festival with his work “Cain’s Descendant”, he has received many more from international festivals throughout the world. His later films include “Death of Domomata” and “USB”. Between theatrical releases, he directed “Tenshochi,” a documentary focusing on the rare talents of theater directors Yukio Ninagawa, Hideki Noda and Masahide Komaki. As a visual planner for the stage, Oku directed “Elizabeth” for Toho Musicals, “The Character” for NODA MAP and “Casablanca” for Takarazuka, among others. After contributing videos/visuals in “TAP MAN x PIANO MAN x MOVIE MAN” and “Yoshida Brothers Live”, he won critical praise for the originality and possibilities that he presented in “Black Cat”, receiving the “Excellent Staff Award” at the Yomiuri Theater Awards in 2008. This originality continues to shine in theatrical works that he has directed, such as “Kimidori”, “Freaks”, and “South of Heaven”.
