Pictures That Tell a Story [Part I] has begun at the Kankai Pavilion.
Exhibition view
As in part one, the showcased pictures are noted for pictorial qualities and expressive brush strokes and facial expressions that don’t rely on words to communicate their stories.
The painting Scene of mournful assembly at the death of Buddha is a case in point.
In the top right part, Maya (Buddha’s mother) has descended to Earth on a cloud to be with her son. She is supported by heavenly maidens and her face is buried in her sleeve. Clearly she is in deep mourning for the death of her son.
Here is the venerable Ananda, one of the Buddha’s ten disciples. He has fainted upon hearing the news of the Buddha’s death, an indication of his extreme grief. After leaving home, Ananda became one of the Buddha’s earliest disciples. He is the one noted for receiving the most teachings from the master and his ability to remember them, so much so that he is often referred to as the disciple who has literally “heard much” (tamon daichi).
We invite you to turn your eyes to these and many other works and to “listen” to their stories told pictorially without words.
