From Hara Museum ARC (Gunma)
Selected works of painting and calligraphy from the Hara Rokuro Collection are on display in the Kankai Pavilion.
Sesson, Portrait of Lie Zi, Muromachi period, 16th century
These include Sesson’s Portrait of Lie Zi, a unique depiction of a floating man in a fluttering robe; Waka poem “Kokin Waka-shu,” first part of “Spring” chapter with painted ground and butterfly design by Hon’ami Koetsu, renowned as one of the “Three Brushes” or Sanpitsu of the Kan’ei Era; A pair of cranes by the Chinese painter Shen Nanping, who gave great influences to painters of the Edo period.
In this exhibition, traditional works are displayed together with Void by Anish Kapoor, Red on Red by Mark Rothko and other works of contemporary art, weaving together form and aesthetics that transcend time and place.
