Time Visualized – Selection from the Hara Museum Collection [ARC]

Cao Fei, RMB City: A Second Life City Planning, 2009

In music and movies, the passage of time is clearly expressed, but in art, time comes in many different forms. There is of course the time spent making the artwork and the time spent viewing it. Artist often try to capture “momentary time” in their artwork, or express “elapsed time” through some process or material that transforms, or “irreversible time” through some action or repetition.

This exhibition invites you to view works from the Hara Museum Collection from the perspective of “visualization.” Art may be said to be a record of the artist’s attempt to give form to the invisible, be it a concept or some unseen world. Please come and consider what time means to you as you view the various expressions of “time” through pictures, sculptures, photographs and video.

The show borrows its theme from Time Present, the current exhibition on at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo until January 11, which features photographic art from the Deutsche Bank Collection that revisits the marvelous ability of the photograph to capture and express snippets of time.

Time Visualized includes works from the Hara Museum Collection by some of the same artists featured in that show, including Tokihiro Sato, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Miwa Yanagi, Cao Fei and Boris Mikhailov.
