Report on “BYAKUYA”

From the Hara Museum, Tokyo

On Saturday October 12 and Sunday October 13, the Hara Museum presented a unique visual/dance performance entitled Byakuya with visuals produced by the acclaimed film director and image maker Shutaro Oku, dance choreography by the well-known Ikuyo Kuroda, and live music by Jiro Matsumoto.

Oku projects his monotone imagery directly onto the Hara Museum buildings and environs using a projection technique called Projection Mapping, which instantly turns the museum garden into a theater.
Making clever use of the existing configuration, the projections transform the museum walls, windows and doors in each scene into a church, then a bread factory, then a restaurant, and so on.

Kuroda’s eloquent movements and the rhythmic sound of the guitar played by Matsumoto, carried by the clear autumn breeze, touched an emotional chord in all who watched.

It was a fantastic performance indeed, and a perfect autumn event. Thank you all for joining us and apologies for not being able to accommodate everyone with a seat. Having more than 300 people at each performance was totally unexpected!
