KAKIMAWASU WORKSHOP

In 1945, August 9th, an atomic bomb was dropped in Nagasaki. Amidst the destruction, a kaki (Japanese persimmon) tree miraculously survived. The Revive Kaki Tree Project was launched in order to distribute saplings from this tree to children. Nine years ago, Hara Museum ARC received a sapling. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the project. To mark this milestone, the artist Yuta Nakajima (b. 1985 in Gunma) will be holding a workshop at Hara Museum ARC to make charcoal from persimmons gathered from the kaki trees growing throughout the country. The theme is peace and time. Ink made from the charcoal will then be used to create a picture while circling the kaki tree. Participants dressed in black will represent shadows and the passage of time. Their movement around the tree will be captured by camera and a picture will be given to each participant.

The artist and founder of the project, Tatsuo Miyajima (b. in Tokyo in 1957), will be present on that day. We hope you will join us in this wonderful opportunity to ponder peace and art by participating in this workshop.
