Highly popular workshop to be held again this summer!
To make a Japanese fan (uchiwa), you first you fold Japanese paper (washi). Tight, regular folds yield a repeating pattern, while crumpled, wrinkled folds yield a random pattern (a simple tie-dye effect can be had by wrapping the paper with a rubber band, to produce white lines where contact with dye is prevented).
Then you dye the paper. Choosing from among eight colors, you will enjoy the quality of the colors as you dye the paper, using several colors on top of each other or just a single one. As you control the parts that will remain, a pattern emerges. Even if you choose a random approach, a beautiful pattern will appear.
You finally fix the colors, attach the washi onto ribbing, spread it out, and you are done. The ribbing is made with split bamboo. It is supple and easy to hold. It has a subtle fragrance. It is pleasant to hold. It is something you will want to use often after you have made it.
Starting Times (3 sessions): 10:30 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm (approximately 40 minutes per session)
Fee: 500 yen (cost of material) and museum admission.
