From Hara Museum ARC, Gunma
On the grounds of Hara Museum ARC are a number of outdoor installations, one of which is Sunspace for Shibukawa by Olafur Eliasson, a must-see for visitors since its debut in the autumn of 2009.
As you enter the silver-domed pavilion, you will see glowing bands of color cast upon a pure-white, bowl-shaped screen.
In this space, sunbeams streaming through 13 prisms embedded in the domed ceiling are transformed into spectrum of lights and fragments of rainbows.
Keep watching and you will see rainbows change shape as the sun moves, become more or less saturated as the light intensity varies, or slowly disappear as the sun moves behind a cloud.
The design of the dome is such that a perfectly round rainbow will appear for a certain period of time on each of the 24 terms of the year (nijyushi sekki) that mark a change in season. The next oval will appear in Kokuu around April 20.
Following Kokuu are Rikka, Shoman, Boshu, Geshi, etc. Why not come celebrate the next seasonal change with a beautiful oval rainbow in Sunspace for Shibukawa?
