Works by Miwa Yanagi from “Be Alive!” exhibition

From Hara Museum, Tokyo

On view in the most spacious Gallery II of the Hara Museum are works by Miwa Yanagi and Pipilotti Rist.

Miwa Yanagi was chosen to represent the Japanese Pavilion at the previous Venice Biennale (2009). At the Hara Museum, she held her solo exhibition “Miwa Yanagi: The Incredible Tale of the Innocent Old Lady and the Heartless Young Girl” in 2005. Some of the works which appeared at the solo show are now in our collection. Centerpiece of the exhibition was the “fairy tale” series which are currently on view at the Hara.

“Erendira” (2004)

As the basis of this “fairy tale” series, the artist used tales featuring young girls and old women, including the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, Andersen and the short story Erendira by Gabriel García Márquez. This exhibition features five photographs and one video work from the series.

“Suna onna” (2005) video

These scenes are internal landscapes from the artist’s own psyche, and, at the same time, a world of metaphors and symbols that makes them worthy of the appellation “fairy tale.” As such, they are no mere illustrations of the fairy tales on which they are based, but unique creations of the artist Miwa Yanagi that are sure to capture the imagination of all those who view them.
