From Hara Museum ARC, Gunma
Here is a report on the Tabaimo talk event which was held on Saturday, November 5.
By 5 pm, a packed audience was seated in the Café d’Art, which was glowing beautifully against the darkness of the evening. When Tabaimo arrived, she was greeted with excited applause.

Tabaimo began her talk with images from her work entitled Japanese Kitchen, the graduation piece that marked her debut and won the Kirin Contemporary Award in 1999. She moved on to the various exhibitions and projects, including TABAIMO-Yumechigae and YOROYORON Tabaimo, held at Hara Museum ARC in 2003 and the Hara Museum in Tokyo in 2006, respectively. She also spoke about more recent installations,Tabaimo teleco-soup featured in the Japanese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and Midnight Sea, a work that was acquired by the Hara Museum and is currently on view at the ARC.

During the event, the artist spoke about her perception of art: I see contemporary art as being different from entertainment. It isn’t something that I want to place in front of everyone like some fancy present. Instead, it’s something I want to throw as far as I can, for people to go and bring back. Admittedly, this is a difficult task for them to do, but I try to make it worth the trouble. For my part, this is the only effort I see myself making; for the people who do the retrieving, I can only hope that they find something interesting in the act.
After the talk, people queued up for her autograph.
Meiro Koizumi and Hiroe Saeki, artists whose works are currently on view at the Hara Museum in Tokyo, were also present in the audience, having joined the bus tour that had been organized from Tokyo. Before reaching Hara Museum ARC, the tour made a stop in Maebashi to take in some works by Koizumi that were on exhibit at a traditional Japanese guest house called Rinko-kaku.
The exhibition Body and Soul- Selections from the Hara Museum Collection (which includes Midnight Sea) will be on view at the ARC until January 4, 2012.
