What might be called Jakuchu’s “experimental” works, including ink paintings and prints, are taken up in Episode 4 of this series. One of these is a Jakuchu’s monochrome representation of the Yodogawa River, a stone rubbing known as the Joukyoushuu handscroll. In connection with this, Landscape of Yodo River, Maruyama Okyo’s depiction of the river that he painted at about the same time as Jakuchu’s work is introduced. In the section on painters in the Who’s Who of modern-era cultural figures in Kyoto, Heian Jinbutsu-shi (1775 and 1782 editions), Jakuchu and Okyo are listed as the two most popular artists in the number 1 and 2 positions. How will their works be compared in the program?

By the way, Maruyama Okyo’s Landscape of Yodo River will be on display at Hara Museum ARC after November. We invite you to view the fine detail and unique composition that Okyo uses in his masterpiece with you own eyes.
