The National Art Center, Tokyo

The National Art Center, Tokyo is the national government’s fifth art institution to be organized under the umbrella of the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art. The five other art institutions include The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; National Film Archive of Japan; The National Museum of Western Art; and The National Museum of Art, Osaka.

The National Art Center, Tokyo (NACT) is a unique and innovative art exhibition facility: instead of maintaining a permanent collection, it makes the most of a total of 14,000 square meters of exhibition space, one of the largest in Japan, and focuses on serving as a venue for various art exhibitions. The NACT also promotes outreach activities through its educational programs, and the Art Library serves to collect and disseminate information related to art.

Located in Tokyo, an international city that attracts people and ideas from all over Japan as well as the rest of the world, the NACT will provide people with opportunities to experience amazing and diverse expressions of creativity and contribute to bringing forth a new culture based on the idea of mutual understanding and partnership.

 

The Priorities of the National Art Center,Tokyo

1. Exhibitions
―The NACT presents a large variety of art expressions and offers a fresh perspective on artistic creativity.
・Artist associations which run nation-wide activities are given opportunities to hold their annual exhibitions.
・The NACT’s curatorial staff generates special exhibitions that highlight the latest trend in art both in Japan and abroad.
・The NACT serves as a venue for exhibitions co-organized with mass media companies and other art institutions.
2. Collecting and Disseminating Information
―The NACT places an emphasis on accumulating art materials in the following areas and making their content accessible to the public.
Information about art exhibitions held within Japan.
A comprehensive collection of post-WWII Japanese exhibition catalogues.
Various materials related to modern and contemporary Japanese art.
3. Education and Public Programs
―The NACT serves as a site of participation, interaction, and creativity.
・Lectures, symposiums, and gallery-talks related to exhibitions are regularly organized.
・Through artists’ talks and workshops, the NACT provides diverse audience with opportunities to learn about and discuss different works of art.
・Internship and volunteer programs provide opportunities for hands-on activities at the NACT.
・The NACT collects information and materials related to educational extension projects at museums.

Closing Days

Tuesdays
*On Tuesdays that fall on national holidays the Center will be open, and closed the next weekday.
*Closed for the New Year holidays: December 25 (Tue.), 2018 – January 8 (Tue.), 2019.
*On Tuesday May 1, 2018 the NACT will be open.

Admission

Admission is determined for each exhibition.
Admission to annual exhibition of artists associations is also determined by the organizers.
