The first collection exhibition of fiscal 2025 is made up of two parts: a special show called “Circles and Rings in Postwar Art,” and “Collection Highlights,” which runs for the entire year.
In “Circles and Rings in Postwar Art,” we focus on circles and rings as well as spheres. Being plain and simple, these shapes are receptive to a variety of artistic intentions, leading to their repeated use, particularly in postwar Japanese art. Although they are geometric forms, they have no corners. Yet, at the same time, they lack the indefinite and irregular quality of organic shapes. In that sense, the ambiguous circle can assume any role. In this special exhibition, we adopt several perspectives as a means of considering these issues.
Meanwhile, in “Collection Highlights,” we introduce prominent and newly acquired works from the National Museum of Art, Osaka Collection. Rooted in the era of artists such as Paul Cézanne and Max Ernst, the collection sheds light on various aspects of modern and contemporary art. Visitors will also have an opportunity to view recently additions by Joseph Beuys, Takashi Murakami, Maureen Gallace, Maria Farrar, and others throughout the year.
