Take Ninagawa congratulates Wang Bing on receiving the 2021 Chanel Next Prize.

The Chanel Next Prize is an international award to catalyse innovation across arts and culture. Developed to provide an emerging generation of creative risk-takers with resources to tackle ambitious new projects, the Chanel Next Prize creates conditions for artists to experiment with visionary ideas, test new forms of artmaking and collaborate across disciplines.

Since first attracting attention with Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks (2003), an epic nine-hour-long documentary spotlighting those who were caught, carried along or abandoned by the unremitting tide of industrialization, Wang has built a portfolio of feature-length films spanning documentary and fiction, as well as video and photographic works. Wang does not attempt to impose narrative or moral frameworks onto his subjects, but rather follows an anthropological vein to create empathetic portraits of anonymous people.
