Revolving around the notion of “plastic” (that which is formable, that which is malleable), Medium and Dimension: Plastic is an attempt to “form” both artworks and the exhibition itself on site. The project takes place at CS-Lab, located within the premises of Tokyo Zokei University.

In the conventions of “plastic arts,” such as painting and sculpture, “forming” is understood as manipulating matter into a fixed form according to the maker’s will. However, by revisiting the intrinsic multiplicity of plasticity, this exhibition frames it as a contingent process in which one of the innumerable potential forms latent within the material happens to be concretized. Moreover, not only the forms of the artworks but also the methods of production, the relationships between curator and artist, and the spatial arrangements—all elements of the exhibition—are treated as formable and malleable.

The venue, CS-Lab, is a space operated and used autonomously by students, independently of the formal university framework. In this circular space, not only students but also faculty members, administrative and facilities staff, and visitors from outside have developed a rich field of learning beyond their usual titles.

Navigating multiple social personas such as critic/practitioner, curator/artist, editor, translator, researcher, and educator, Nakao Takuya and Okumura Yuki have both explored the relationship between a rule- or instruction-based, “game”-like working procedure and its resulting forms that manifest differently each time the procedure is “played,” with reference to various art-historical frameworks. In this project, the two conceived a situation in which people present at the same time and place would engage in the act of “forming” while circulating among multiple positions.

Medium and Dimension: Plastic is an attempt to realize both artwork production and exhibition installation at once, by having multiple participants play nine “word games” and ten “form games,” thereby generating an unprecedented creative spiral.
