The first large-scale solo exhibition of an artist whose work traverses the realms of manga and fine art. After studying painting at Musashino Art University, Yokoyama developed an expressive approach – full of the feeling of speed and a sense of humor – that might be best described as ‘paintings incorporating the compositional format of manga’. The exhibition presents more than 700 works including the original drawings (from the museum’s collection) for the showpiece, New engineering, and original color paintings on public display for the first time. Devices such as artificial turf covering the floors in the exhibition design by Torafu Architects Inc. also bring to life the perspective of the world reflected in the artworks. Yokoyama’s most recent collection of works, BABYBOOMFINAL has just been released, and a catalogue documenting this exhibition is in the making. The artist has another solo show opening on 4 June at ARATANIURANO.
