Award
Exhibition view at Gyoko-dori Underground Gallery, 2009
Launched in 2006 with the aim of discovering and fostering budding artists of exceptional talent, Art Award Tokyo is bestowed annually on works selected from the graduation shows of Japanese art schools. The success of the awards is reflected in the number of past recipients, the likes of Kojin Haruka, now building careers as young artists. This year’s 45 shortlisted works are on public exhibition through 30 May in Tokyo. The jury charged with both selecting the works and bestowing the awards included Hasegawa Yuko, Goto Shigeo, Koyama Tomio, Sato Naoki and guest judge Nawa Kohei. The winners were announced on 29 April, with the Grand Prize going to Matsushima Shunsuke (Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Science) and the the Runner-up Prize going to Iwana Yasutake (Seian University of Art and Design). Matsushima incidentally was the recipient of the CREAM Prize at the 2009 International Festival for Arts and Media Yokohama CREAM Competition.
