The 35th Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award, considered the Akutagawa Prize (for new writers of serious fiction) of the photography world, has been awarded this year to Takagi Cozue. The photographer, whose expressive approaches range from digital collage to straight photography, was recognized for her photo-collections Mid and Ground published in 2009 (Akaaka Art Publishing). Takagi was born in 1985 in Nagano. She was awarded the grand prix at the 2006 New Cosmos of Photography and the Fuchu Art Museum Prize at the Vision of Contemporary Art (VOCA) 2009.

The Kimura Ihei Award was established in 1975 by the Asahi Shimbun Company. Previous recipients include Hatakeyama Naoya, Ninagawa Mika and Shiga Lieko. Takagi’s award-winning works will be on exhibit in April (see below for details).
