Rendering of the LeSportsac A.I.R. POP-UP STORE exterior and items from the label’s collection developed in collaboration with Kevin Devine.
This week marks the opening of LeSportsac’s temporary A.I.R. POP-UP STORE in the Harajuku district of Tokyo. The outlet provides a venue to see, hold and buy items from the label’s Artist-In-Residence (A.I.R.) line of bags created since 2008 in collaboration with emerging artists from around the world.
The A.I.R. POP-UP STORE launches with lines developed together with three artists. Japanese artist Matsuyama Tomokazu, currently working out of a studio in Brooklyn, makes mainly pop and fantasy paintings, but also works in sculpture and installations, and has collaborated with Nike and Levi’s as well. Kevin Devine, also based in New York, is best known for making paintings and collages that are sprinkled with artistic symbols, and has garnered attention for his graphic work for Bono’s EDUN label. London-based Katharina Leuzinger, who is of Swiss and Japanese parentage, builds on a style that is colorful, adorable and full of playfulness. She is the recipient of the D&AD Award among a great many other design prizes.
While LeSportsac has outlets in cities around the world, the Harajuku store marks their pilot A.I.R. POP-UP STORE. It is positioned as the base for the label’s launch of a new boys’ and girl’s category.
