Launched in 2007 to support the activities of up-and-coming artists, the ‘shiseido art egg’ program selects three artists each year, through portfolio reviews of open submissions, to stage a three-week solo show at the Shiseido Gallery.
First up in this the fourth round of program, and selected from 336 submissions, is a solo show by Soya Asae (8-31 January) whose paintings, almost translucent in quality, appeal viscerally to the human senses. Taking ‘the resonance of color’ as her theme, Soya uses colored pieces of vinyl sheeting and other materials to create an installation that covers the entire gallery from floor to ceiling.
In the second show in the series (2-28 February) Okamoto Junichi transforms space dramatically, and the third (5-28 March), Murayama Goro weaves strands of hemp to form the substrate for his unique world of painting. Following the three exhibitions, a review panel will select one artist to receive the shiseido art egg prize, with a grant of 200,000 yen. The results will be announced in late April.
