Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions

19 – 28 February 2010
Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (Ebisu)

Shirin Neshat   Untitled (contrast test) Women Without Men    2009

Taking ‘Searching Songs’ as its theme, this year’s festival picks up on the similarities between song and filmic image as vehicles for forming memory, narrative, history and community, in exploring filmic image. The free-admission exhibition includes Paul McCarthy & Mike Kelley’s collaborative remakes of video art classics, works by Katarina Zdjelar reflecting her interest in language and song, as well as early video art classics by Nam June Paik and Vito Acconci. New this year is a series of outdoor, off-site works. Among the solid lineup in the screening program is Shirin Neshat’s 2009 Venice Film Festival Silver Lion-winning feature-length film and shorts by artist Alfredo Jaar, known for his works developed from a journalistic perspective. The festival also features an array of events including live performances.
