As a participating artist of Aichi Triennale 2019, I’m very saddened for not being able to show Child Soldier to the Japanese and international audiences in Aichi. I have insisted on withdrawing my work Child Soldier from the exhibition. My withdrawal is in protest against the censorship of the exhibition “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’”
The decision to shut down “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” has been frustrating to all of us.
As an artist, it is my fundamental responsibility to protect the freedom of expression. Regardless of one’s likes and dislikes toward a particular work of art, a work of art must not be censored by any type of authority, coercion, or threat. I hope there will be another opportunity in the future to show my work, where and when the freedom of expression is fully realized.
