Take Ninagawa is pleased to announce Aki Sasamoto’s solo exhibition Squirrel Ways, opening at the American Academy of Arts and Letters on March 18, 2023, and continuing through June 7.

Sasamoto presents Squirrel Ways (2022), an architectural piece on the cutting edge between installation and performance. Sasamoto produced the work during her residency in spring 2021 at Atelier Calder, based in Alexander Calder’s former home and studio in Saché, France. Resembling a stage set, the installation incorporates shoji panels, doors, and shutters that at first appear functional and yet contain odd and inexplicable details. In giving physical form to the concept of accessibility, these passageways expose our preconceptions of inside and outside and subvert the symbolism of entry and exit.

This is the first exhibition of Squirrel Ways in the United States, following presentations at Kunsthal Rotterdam in 2021 and the Aichi Triennale in 2022.

Sasamoto will perform Squirrel Ways on March 18, April 8, and May 20.
