Tokyo’s Akihabara district is about to witness the opening of a new art center dedicated to ‘creating new forms of art’. Housed in the now custom-renovated former Chiyoda Rensei Junior High School, 3331 Arts Chiyoda is modeled as an ‘alternative art space for the 21st century’ founded on the basis of artist leadership, personal participation and cross-disciplinary approaches. The numbers ‘3331’ incidentally, express the rhythm of the traditional Edo ippon tejime handclap performed at auspicious occasions.
The official opening on Sunday 14 March will be celebrated with special exhibitions, symposia, and an opening party. The center opens and will operate under the directorship of artist Nakamura Masato.
