RAT HOLE GALLERY (Minamiaoyama)
Lullaby
The Japanese pavilion representative at the 53rd Venice Biennale presents a new video work and photographs dealing with a subject she has explored for some time past: old age. An old women and a young girl struggle with all their might to hold each other down. Once each has the other under control, head on lap, she attempts to soothe her with a lullaby. The scene is played out over and over again until the living room – disproportionately cramped – collapses, leaving the pair facing off against a background of a nighttime cityscape, in a work that could be described as challenging stereotyped images of elderly women, girls, and the family.
