16 January – 13 February
Tomio Koyama Gallery (Kiyosumi)
Eyes in Silence 2009 Acrylic on canvas 227.3 x 181.8 cm
A solo show by an artist who, reflecting on occurrences in her own life and stories heard from friends, portrays hopes and unfulfilled dreams on large-scale canvases, rendered in the most delicate of brushwork. Her new 4 x 8 meter self-portrait, in which tears of blood spill from her eyes, makes the artist’s pain-filled thoughts almost palpable. Other works at this outing include new and older portraits of friends, and photographs capturing what could easily be scenes from the imagination. The artist’s gaze, fixed upon herself, inspires one to rethink the art of the self-portrait.
