This dark fantasy by cinematic genius Terry Gilliam is a reflection of the director’s own life. In exchange for immorality, Doctor Parnassus makes a deal with the Devil, promising to give him his beloved daughter. Only three days are left before the deal is set to go down. Along with a young man named Tony, who suffers from amnesia, the Doctor makes one last desperate attempt to save his daughter in a labyrinth of mirrors. In the midst of shooting the film, Heath Ledger, who played Tony, suddenly died. The production was saved by Ledger’s best friends Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell. By dividing up Ledger’s role between the three actors, Gilliam created a film that is notable for an even more brilliant use of his trademark gimmicks and imagination.
