チェックと日本の現代美術界についての感想

Mizuma artist Aiko Miyanaga à Paris

2010年6月16日

Aristocratic Pierrot (2007)

The Maison de la Culture du Japon du Paris does not often present Japanese contemporary art, so it was a pleasure to find the spectacular waterside location being used intelligently to present two emergent women artists from Japan, in Paris on residencies currently: Aiko Miyanaga and Naoko Sekine. I also enjoyed this as an antidote to the much hyped Beat Kitano show at Fondation Cartier across town (see my blog of 10/05/15 ). Doubles Lumières was an atmospheric exhibition, much closer in spirit to current trends among youngerJapanese contemporary artists born in the 1970s.

Aiko Miyanaga is an unusual Mizuma artist, whose works are quiet, meditative and eschew obvious Japoniste references. She works making small sculptures from the fragile white substance napthaline, which slowly decomposes over time in the air. The small objects – copies of old shoes, keys, a dress – have a certain timeless mystery, even as they degrade into crystals and fragments in the glass boxes. In other works, she uses salt drawn up from rivers or the sea, including one work based on salt from the Sumida River in Tokyo. The gallery had built a box like room, into which curious visitors climbed to find an installation of empty old wooden furniture found at Parisian flea markets, and parts of a bedroom that evoked half forgotten memories of an unnamed past.

The accompanying artist Naoko Sekine has been getting more of the local attention – her extremely fine abstract landscapes, etched with tiny strokes of pencil, then smudged or rubbed out, fitting well with conceptions of meticulous, small scale Japanese aesthetics, and also very popular as an activity for children.

Doubles Lumières, until June 26th, Maison de la Culture du Japon, Quai Branly, Paris
