Sotheby's New York sale results

Sotheby's Contemporary art auction held 9 March in New York realized a total of US$5,847,378. The top lot was Andy Warhol's Self Defense (1985-1986) fetching $506,500 (est. $250-350,000), followed by Robert Motherwell's Open #94 (1969) at $224,500 (est. $100-150,000). Among the Japanese artists were Sugimoto Hiroshi and Nawa Kohei, whose PixCell-Bambi (2005) was the sale's biggest surprise, fetching $50,000, or more than five times its high estimate of $5-7,000.
